We took the quiz on Whitman and talked a bit about The Great Gatsby.

HOMEWORK:  Read chapter 1 of Gatsby and complete the handout distributed in class.

WHAT’S NEXT:  The Great Gatsby:  Who is Gatsby?

We spent the beginning of class discussing the organization of the research paper.  We broke the primary sources into time periods and reviewed parenthetical citation rules.

After the break, we discussed the government’s rights and abilities to limit individual freedom.  This discussion led us into the introduction to 1984.  I passed out 1984 Study Questions.

HOMEWORK:  Work on research paper and read 1984.

WHAT’S NEXT:  Working day on Friday on either the paper or novel.  Quiz on Chapter One of the novel (p. 1-108) on Thursday, 4/26.

We brainstormed ideas for the next round of articles.  Each student was assigned an news/feature article for the Monday after vacation.  They must do at least one news/feature article for the two that are due on 4/23.

HOMEWORK:  Four story generators due on Friday.  Articles due on Monday 4/23.

We talked about the Gatsby narrator, Nick Carraway.  Using the text from the first chapter, we tried to figure out what he was like and how he felt about Gatsby.

HOMEWORK:  Continue reading in the novel.  You must read through chapter 3 by 4/23.
