Period 6B

Posted by Mr. Varnum on 24th April 2007

I distributed the American Dream Research Project handout and we discussed what it entailed. We also discussed plagiarism and how to avoid it. Part of the homework is to get the handout signed by a parent/guardian.

Following that, we discussed the first three chapters of The Great Gatsby in preparation for the quiz tomorrow. We spent most of our time discussion the relationships between the main characters. We noted that although the novel is named after Gatsby and is narrated by Nick, the central character seems to be Daisy.

HOMEWORK: Study for Gatsby quiz on Thursday and get handout signed.

WHAT’S NEXT: Organizing your research paper and Emily Dickinson.

We discussed today’s Boston Globe article about new audio technology which can target individual listeners in public.  We talked about this technology in relation to 1984.

We reviewed the study questions for the first chapter (section) of 1984.  We reviewed the characters, concepts and ideas from Oceania and Winston’s world.  We tried to make connections between these concepts and ideas  and the concepts and ideas in today’s society.

HOMEWORK: Prepare for quiz on Thursday.

WHAT’S NEXT:  Working on research paper and Victorian poetry.
