I handed out The Scarlet Letter and gave a brief preview.

We took the vocab quiz and then began the American Dream presentations.

HOMEWORK: Continue reading in The Scarlet Letter and read 38-46 “A Narrative of the Captivity” and answer Reading Check questions on page 46.

We reviewed the SAT prompts from last week.  We talked about proper thesis statement format (Topic-Opinion-Reasons) and how to use specific detail.

I handed out the Grendel novels.  They are to be read by Monday, September 24.

We also introduced the Anglo-Saxon period and talked about heroes, good vs. evil, and the rise of Christianity.

College application essays were turned in.

HOMEWORK:  Read pp. 18-38 and do “Reading Check” questions on page 38.  Read Grendel and prepare for vocab quiz on Unit 1 on Wednesday.

We took the vocab quiz for most of the period. Following that, students worked on the Bradford reading which is due on Wednesday.
